OperaUpClose in association with MAST Mayflower Studios presents
Riders to the Sea
30 January – 1 February 2025
Event details
Vaughan Williams’ and JM Synge’s
Riders to the Sea
With a new dramatic prologue and chamber orchestration by Michael Betteridge.
A man, full of unshed tears and haunted by the ghosts of his past, finds himself drawn back to the sea, and the memory of his mother, his sisters, and a great loss.
Newly orchestrated for oboe, clarinet and accordion, and with a new dramatic prologue, The Last Bit of the Moon, by Michael Betteridge and ArtfulScribe‘s Community Sirens Collective with Antosh Wojcik, Vaughan Williams’ masterful miniature expands into a powerful tale of family, grief and love’s enduring power.
In a production that weaves together live performance, projection and recorded sound, OperaUpClose bring their own inimitable style to a classic with musical storytelling at its most direct and visceral.
The show is captioned through as part of the production design.

About OperaUpClose
OperaUpClose is a national touring opera company with storytelling, partnership, and innovation at its heart.
Since 2009 we have grown from our first, Olivier-Award winning, production in a 35-seat theatre above a pub, to the only full-time resident opera company in the South West working with multi- artform collaborators from our home at the dynamic cultural hub MAST Mayflower Studios, Southampton.
We engage the most exciting, emerging creative talent to distil the essence of classic operas into new, contemporary chamber works with their own artistic integrity and excellence, bringing the new and the established together in visceral, up close theatrical productions.
