REWRITES: Nel's Place
14 - 15 March 2024
Event details
REWRITES showcases new musicals at the start of their journey to the stage
Trapped in a hoard of memories and music, Nel yearns to make space for granddaughter Molly’s 16th birthday celebrations. Can Nel find a way through grief to let her family in?
Nel’s Place is a new musical from Sheep Soup, examining what material things really mean to us, and how easily we can become buried by the past.
With songs spanning a number of genres from rap to soul, folk to ballads and the show not only represents Nel’s struggle with hoarding but also allows the audience to reflect on their own relationship with ‘stuff’.
Each evening, before the performance starts, there will be a short special preview of a brand new musical in development:
Thursday 14 March – Coming Back Around by David Fallon and Fraser Scott
A story for our times, and times are hard. A story of intergenerational poverty set in a housing estate in Glasgow. Coming Back Around is Sky’s story: both the one written for her, and the one she’s desperate to tell.’
Friday 15 March – The Edge of Me by Finn Anderson (Islander, A Mother’s Song)
Kit’s sexual desires are feral, boisterous and untameable creatures and tonight they’ve crept out from under his bed to take him on the journey of a lifetime. Join Kit and his band of synth-playing, shape-shifting monsters as they push themselves to the absolute limit in this new musical which promises to be playful, messy, and full of heart.
About REWRITES
As the grand master of musicals, Stephen Sondheim, once said, ‘Musical comedies aren’t written, they’re rewritten’.
A mix of works-in-progress, concert performances and short preview-style ‘curtain raisers’, you will get to be a part of something special, right at the beginning!
REWRITES is a partnership programme led by The Lowry, Birmingham Hippodrome, MAST Mayflower Studios and Norwich Theatre.
Initiated by The Lowry in 2017, musicals featured previously in REWRITES include: No Miracles Here by The Letter Room, A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Sad) by Jon Brittain and Matthew Floyd Jones, A Mother’s Song by Finn Anderson and Tania Azevedo and Snowflake by Lewis Cornay. The hit West End musical Operation Mincemeat started out at a scratch event as part of REWRITES.
